NATIONAL CIVICS LEARNING WEEK EVENT

MARCH 11, 2026 | 9:00 AM-12:00 PM

WV SUPREME COURT-STATE CAPITOL-CHARLESTON AND LIVESTREAMING 
 

The West Virginia Civics Coalition will present “Civic Learning for a Stronger West Virginia” on March 11, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Supreme Court, State Capitol Complex, Charleston, and by livestreaming to any location with Internet connectivity. 

During the third annual National Civics Learning Week (March 9-13), champions for civic learning all over the country will feature programs encouraging a dialogue about the importance of civics education. 

The schedule for the West Virginia event is:

9:00 AM – Welcome 
9:05 AM – WV Legislative Policies-WV House of Delegates Speaker Roger Hanshaw
9:20 AM – Teen Courts-WV Supreme Court Justice Thomas Ewing
9:40 AM – America 250 Celebration-George and Martha Washington
10:00 AM WV Voting System – WV Secretary of State Kris Warner-Voting Machines/Learning Center
10:30 AM – WVCC Initiatives-Listening Tour and Cords Program-Student Leaders-Sarah McBee/Shelby Plants/Joshua Copley/Maddox Davis
10:50 AM – Mock Appellate Court Argument-Woodrow Wilson High School Rho Kappa Chapter
11:35 AM – Black Policy-Dr. Shanequa Smith
11:45 AM – 26th Amendment-Office of the Secretary of State
12:00 PM – Closing

Media, students, teachers, community leaders, and the public are invited to attend in person. The seating capacity is limited.  Advance registration is required. Register here: Civic Learning for a Stronger WV. A complimentary box lunch is available in the Capitol Cafeteria beginning at 12:00 PM for registered guests only. 

Optional tours of the Supreme Court Learning Center are available after the conclusion of the event, as well as at the State Museum in the WV Culture Center.

The two options for livestreaming from anywhere with an Internet connection are West Virginia Judiciary – YouTube or the West Virginia Judiciary website: Appellate Courts – Argument Webcast | West Virginia Judiciary. During the various question and answer periods during the event, questions can be sent by text to 304-437-5442. 

This event is presented by The West Virginia Civics Coalition in collaboration with iCivics. The coalition is an alliance of government organizations, universities, school classrooms, law offices, and numerous civic organizations.
